PEORIA, Ill. — Central Illinois saw the first matchup between Peoria City Soccer and Springfield Athletic Sporting Club (ASC) Wednesday night.
Peoria headed to the State’s Capitol to face the newfound USL League Two Heartland Division foe, and won 2-0 despite some weather challenges along the way.
Just over 14 minutes in, a lightning delay put the game on pause, causing soccer players and fans to wait roughly 2 hours for play to resume.
Unfortunately, the weather issues caused the live-stream to experience technical difficulties, and the first 14 minutes of the match were the only minutes seen.
But once the match resumed, Brady Drozdowski put Peoria City on the board in the 21st minute.
That 1-0 lead would keep us ahead at half-time and beyond, until Danail Sergiev put the game away in the 88th minute, sealing the deal with a 2-0 victory.
Drozdowski was unanimously voted the Man of the Match after scoring the game-winning goal early on.
We host Springfield ASC Sunday, July 9th at Shea Stadium for our final home game of the season.
The Sunday night matchup is “Park District Day,” in collaboration with the Peoria Park District. We look forward to welcoming youth soccer players and their families to Shea Stadium to cheer the boys on to victory. We also are welcoming Limestone Soccer Club, Morton United FC, and the Morton Public Library summer reading program to Sunday’s game.
Tropical Sno, Gramma Nana’s Kitchen, and Haddad’s (Tony’s on Wheels) will be there for food trucks.
We welcome Volkswagen of Peoria again to Shea Stadium to showcase their 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan in the tailgating section.
Come cheer on Peoria City as we look to close out the season strong at home! We have our final match of the season next Saturday, July 15th at Des Moines.
