(COLUMBIA, MISSOURI) — The historic inaugural season for Peoria City’s WPSL side continues with a 2-0 victory over Missouri Reign.
Peoria City has now won five WPSL matches in a row, outscoring opponents 18-1 in those matches.
A heat advisory raged on across the Midwest, causing the WPSL II match to be postponed until the night of Sunday, June 22.
Due to the later start time of the WPSL match, the temperatures cooled off in Columbia, Missouri to set up a pleasant match with a 7:30 PM start time.
This would be the second time these two teams faced off. Peoria played host to Missouri on June 7, where the Carp secured a 3-0 victory at home.
Now the teams faced off at Columbia College, with Peoria ending out their inaugural season with two away matches.
The game would remain even, 0-0, until the 17th minute.
Emily Tobin (Kansas) would drive with the ball all the way from Peoria’s defensive zone, past the half line where she’d find Lauren Seppi (Illinois).
Seppi would move the ball forward, taking two touches before laying it off for a driving Tobin.
Tobin would put on a ball handling clinic, slicing through three Reign defenders before ripping a shot towards the net.
A deflected shot would be met by a sprinting AJ Mayock (Illinois) who would send the ball past the keeper. Peoria goes up 1-0.
The score would remain that way through half time.
A tightly-contested match would keep the score 1-0 in favor of Peoria for most of the second half.
That’s until the 84th minute when Miki Hayashi (Arizona State) was fouled in the box by a Reign player.
Hayashi would step up to take the penalty kick, scoring it with ease.
This would seal the deal for Peoria City, who would win their fifth WPSL matchup in a row.
Four out of those five matches would be clean sheets, with Peyton Rhodes (Illinois) in net.
Peoria City ends the regular season on Friday, June 27 in Earth City, Missouri against Lou Fusz Athletic.
