Peoria City Earns Point on the Road against Des Moines

(WEST DES MOINES, IA) — Taking on the #4 ranked team in USL League Two, the Peoria City Flying Carp earned a point on the road against the Des Moines Menace.

It was a thrilling game, with Des Moines leading by 1 at the half after a goal in the 20th minute.

But it would be Luke Persenico with the penalty kick goal in the 2nd half to tie things up after DJ Koulai drew a foul from the Des Moines keeper.

Peoria City didn’t let off the brakes, continuing the attack for the rest of the game.

Many strong chances for both squads in the second half, but Persenico’s 2nd half goal in the 53rd minute would be the last of the game.

Coach Paye was pleased with the final result. He says Luke Persenico can “change the game in the split of a second,” and that’s one of the reasons the Clarke University Head Coach brought his player from Clarke to Peoria City.

“The guys stayed with the game plan, and came out with a point. I’m pleased with it,” Coach Paye said.

In a postgame interview with Luke Persenico, he gave credit to the Menace and their reputation, but said Peoria City worked together extremely well in the first match since starting to train together.

“No one doubted us. We all stayed confident and knew what we were capable of,” Persenico said. “We knew what was coming. The fans, the environment, it’s great to be around and have their support.”

Persenico and the 2024 team will get their first experience with the Peoria City home crowd in one week, as Peoria takes on Chicago Dutch Lions FC at home.
