Des Moines Deals Peoria City 4-1 Setback

PEORIA, IL (June 22, 2022) – Peoria City was in search of their first home victory on Wednesday evening as they took on the Des Moines Menace. This was a rematch of the May 27th matchup at Shea Stadium, when Des Moines defeated Peoria City 4-2

The first half did not start out the way Peoria City wanted, as in the 16th minute of the match, Des Moines was awarded a penalty kick after a forward was taken down in the box. Brandon Bermingham took the kick for Des Moines and made no mistake putting it home in the bottom right corner making it 1-0 Des Moines. That wouldn’t be the only tally of the half, however. A defensive gaffe from Tyler Freitas and GK Edgar Vargas led to a point blank shot on Vargas, which was put in the back of the net to make it 2-0 Des Moines. That was the score at the end of the first half, and Peoria City had a hill to climb.

In the second half Des Moines picked up right where they left off, just a few minutes following the whistle, Des Moines extended their lead to 3-0. Peoria City would not go down without a fight. With their backs against the wall, Adria Sabater received a pass from Tim Ennin, and made no mistake putting it into the back of the net to cut the Des Moines lead to 2. Peoria City showed life for the next 10 minutes of the match, however Des Moines held strong. During stoppage time Des Moines D Neville Morgan delivered a cross into the box for Edoardo Degl’Innocenti and he finished the job giving Des Moines the 4-1 victory on the night.

Peoria City falls to (3-2-3, 12 points), while Des Moines improves to (7-0-1, 22). Although Peoria remains second in the Deep North Division standings, Des Moines needs to win just one of its final four regular-season matches to clinch the division title.

Peoria City will take on Minneapolis City SC Saturday in Minneapolis before returning home for its final two home games, July 1 versus FC Manitoba and July 3 against Thunder Bay Chill.
