Controversial call saves Chicago City SC from Peoria City comeback

CHICAGO, Ill. — Peoria City didn’t go out without a fight Tuesday night.

Marching into the Windy City against the #4 team in all of USL League Two is a feat in itself, but Peoria City made their loyal fanbase proud.

Down 0-2 at half, the boys rallied in the second half, with Jamaine Turner scoring his first goal of the season against Chicago City SC in the 80th minute.

10 minutes later, all of Peoria City and our supporters thought we had scored the equalizer, but we were soon met with heartbreak.

After the officials conversed on the field, they called the play offsides, and overturned Peoria City’s tying goal in the 90th minute. This would have been another goal for Abdel Talabi, who sunk the shot right past the keeper in the bottom of the net.

The Sports Broadcast Solutions announcers said if only the game had “VAR” (Video Assistant Referee) similar to what Major League Soccer (MLS) uses, the final outcome may have changed.

We then had 8 minutes of stoppage time to try and tie the match up, but it just didn’t happen.

The boys have a lot to be proud of tonight. We now look towards Saturday, when we face another top 5 team in the nation, Des Moines Menace.

Des Moines comes to Shea Stadium, and The 309 and local soccer fans are ready to meet them with drums, chants and cheering throughout the match.

We thank Castle’s Patio Inn for hosting our Peoria City away game watch party Tuesday night. We will stream Saturday’s game on Eleven Sports for those who can’t make it.

Peoria City now drops to 3-4 on the season.

“Peoria will play home to future stars of American soccer.”
